AKICILJ: My computer breaks the Palm Desktop

ETA: Problem seems to be fixed, at least for now. I deleted an OEM.INF file, and it has now synched successfully once.

This is crazy. I'm moving from one computer running XP SP 3 to another computer running XP SP 3.

I'm trying to install the Palm Desktop and sync my Treo 680 with the new computer. I first downloaded 4.2, because I had heard that 6.2 (the current version) isn't really compatible with XP.

The install went just fine until it came time to sync with the Treo. The last thing that happened was that the install program asked me if I wanted to sync with Palm Desktop or Outlook. I told it Palm Desktop, and hit the next button. At that point the program just went away. No new dialog box, no nothing.

I ended up calling Palm's for-pay support number, and worked with the support guy for an hour and a half, deleting the Palm software completely, including the registry settings, making sure that the antivirus software was temporarily disabled, and even downloading a new copy of 4.2 from a site that he gave me, just in case the copy of 4.2 I'd found on my own was somehow corrupted.

No luck with any of these. The install program stopped cold, and if I tried to sync without it (because the installation appears to be complete), the "Found New Hardware" message pops up, but the Treo can't find the computer and the computer can't finish doing whatever it does to new hardware. The support guy finally told me he wouldn't charge me for the call, and gave up. He did tell me that there are some known incompatibilities between the Palm Desktop and SP3, and recommended going back to SP2, which I'm rather unwilling to do, unless you guys tell me that's the right way to go.

As a last desperation measure, I downloaded Palm Desktop 6.2, which I'd been highly reluctant to do, and started to install it. Surprise -- it dies at the exact same place. So I tried to do a manual sync, and the result is slightly different. I got a message from the computer saying the new software is installed (which I didn't get from 4.2), but the Treo was still unable to connect with the computer -- it sits there for a couple of minutes saying it's connecting, then pops up an error message saying that it can't connect.

Anyone have any bright ideas? I don't think it's feasible to keep my old computer solely for the purpose of synching my Treo and then copying the files over. And I've now spent most of my morning and a good part of the afternoon on this.

Wiktory!

I tried the Palm Treo support site again, and found a page specifically about problems with synching on XP machines. It recommended a bunch of obscure things, including deleting an OEM.inf file.

I did that, and tried reinstalling. The first time I tried synching after that, the computer froze, but after I rebooted and tried again (without much hope at that point, I must tell you), it worked!

Everything that should be on the computer seems to be on the computer, and the Treo seems to have everything on it still.

And it only took six hours.

Question: Should I call back the support guy and tell him what the fix was so he can add it to the file and maybe help the next poor sucker in my situation?"
