Three topics from redbird

(trying this again, because Opera crashed, taking my almost-completed post with it, and autosave did not do its thing)

Australia -- Australia has a lot of sheep, which is a serious interest of mine. I'm mostly interested in the fleece they grow, though I must admit that lamb is a very tasty thing. (I'm curious about mutton, which I've never had; the only description I've found is that it's "strong-tasting," which doesn't sound like an inherently bad thing.) Pat WINOLJ and I are planning a trip to Australia and New Zealand in the nebulous future, probably after I retire in a few years. The emphasis will be on fiber and yarn -- plus, of course, the sights. I remember the 2000 Olympics and Cathy Freeman and the emphasis on both the damage done to aborigines and the ongoing attempts at reconciliation.

armadillos -- Pretty much the only thing I know about armadillos is that they are mammals and can incubate the leprosy virus in their toe pads. I have a tendency to confuse aardvarks and armadillos -- the word, not the animals. Armadillos seem to be the subject of many jokes about roadkill, though that's not anything I find amusing.

calligraphy -- Calligraphy has always fascinated me, though I don't have the fine motor skill to do a good job of it myself. I did teach myself a version of italic calligraphy, and back in the days when Minicon had name buttons instead of badges, there was a period of several years when I hand-calligraphed all the attendees' names on their buttons. The final year was one of the big Minicons. I can't recall if it was 2,500 or 3,500 names, but it was a hell of a lot. In a drawer or box somewhere, I have a convention name badge with my name calligraphed by Mike Ford. I kept it for the memory of Mike rather than for that of the convention. Jon Singer does lovely left-handed calligraphy.

If anyone wants three random topics, ask and I will provide.
