Greg kept suggesting that I reline the pipes instead of digging them up and replacing them. It would have been much less expensive, but I would have had to do it before they collapsed.
Once I knew it was a problem, I dutifully had the Ron the Sewer Rat guy come over every year and deal with the tree roots. If I'd known about the Orangeburg pipes, I would have had them relined. I just assumed it was one of those house maintenance things that people with lots of trees had to deal with. The previous place -- your old house -- had pine trees, which I was assured have much shallower roots, which was why it was a new-to-me problem at this house.
