My car's exhaust is exhausted

On the way home from [livejournal.com profile] minnehaha K's birthday party, something went *clunk* in my car, and after that, it went *screeech!* all the way home. I couldn't tell what the problem was in the dark, but the next day I could see that part of the exhaust system was dragging on the ground.

Today, I drove the car very slowly to Car-X. Along the way, part of the exhaust system fell off -- the guy at Car-X told me what the part was called, but I forgot. I left the car there while I had lunch at the nearby Taco Bell, and when I got back, I was told the cost would be $400. I told him to go ahead, and one of the employees gave me a ride home, since it was going to be at least two hours until it was done.

I just got a phone call saying the work that the estimate covered was done, but now there was exhaust leaking on the front side of the catalytic converter, to the tune of another $240 to fix that. I told him to go ahead on that as well. If I can get a ride, I can probably get the car back tonight; otherwise, I'll have to wait until tomorrow when Pat can give me a ride.

This is the most expensive repair I've had on this car since I got it in 1996. I just hope it isn't a precursor to a whole raft of additional needed repairs.

Seriously if this is the most expensive repair since 1996 which I admit I surprises me then you are extremely lucky.

"This is the most expensive repair I've had on this car since I got it in 1996."

That's really good.
