My car's exhaust is exhausted

On the way home from
minnehaha K's birthday party, something went *clunk* in my car, and after that, it went *screeech!* all the way home. I couldn't tell what the problem was in the dark, but the next day I could see that part of the exhaust system was dragging on the ground.
Today, I drove the car very slowly to Car-X. Along the way, part of the exhaust system fell off -- the guy at Car-X told me what the part was called, but I forgot. I left the car there while I had lunch at the nearby Taco Bell, and when I got back, I was told the cost would be $400. I told him to go ahead, and one of the employees gave me a ride home, since it was going to be at least two hours until it was done.
I just got a phone call saying the work that the estimate covered was done, but now there was exhaust leaking on the front side of the catalytic converter, to the tune of another $240 to fix that. I told him to go ahead on that as well. If I can get a ride, I can probably get the car back tonight; otherwise, I'll have to wait until tomorrow when Pat can give me a ride.
This is the most expensive repair I've had on this car since I got it in 1996. I just hope it isn't a precursor to a whole raft of additional needed repairs.

Date: 2010-03-22 11:24 pm (UTC)I did have the Summer Of Broken where the car kept not starting and had to be towed several times, but after the third time he saw it, Mike from the Portland BP took a personal interest in it and finally figured out what the problem really was. In total, that one probably cost me more than $640, but it was in several $300-or-so increments.
