A sucky end to an otherwise lovely day
This morning, I went to the Textile Center for their Rock Day spinners and weavers get-together and potluck. I spent several hours spinning on the wheel and chatting with people. I also got a chance to try out Betty's electric wheel. I don't think I'm going to buy my own, but if I ever have knee problems the way she does, it's a great alternative.
Around 4 pm, I headed over to
lsanderson's for his annual Hair of the Dog party. There was much good food and good company and good conversation and Wizard and Zar and Boggle.
I left around midnight. As I got in my car, I realized that a) the acoustics were off and b) my glove compartment was open. Turns out that the passenger side window had been smashed, and my GPS, my iPod Classic, and the associated chargers and adapters had been stolen. I thought I had set the burglar alarm on the car, but if I did, smashing the window didn't set it off. So maybe I didn't. In any case, it probably wouldn't have done anything about the smash-and-grab except ruin my evening earlier. The car stereo was still there, thanks, I expect, to the antitheft system built into it.
It's only money, and while it hurts, I can afford to to replace the items if I choose to. And I'm grateful that my spinning wheel in the trunk of the car was left intact.
But damn.
(I'm not even sure where to go to get the car window fixed. Am I better off going to a Honda repair place or to someplace that specializes in car windows? The last time I had to cope with something like this was 20 years and two cars ago.)

Re glass: I don't know, but your insurance company probably does. (Even if you're not covered for glass, others are.)

We've always worked with an auto glass specialist when we've had broken windows. They typically come to where your car is to replace the glass. I have found that, no matter who I use, they never do a thorough enough job cleaning up the glass shards. Be careful to go over it again yourself!

When I had to replace a side window in my Subaru I phoned the repair department of my dealer for advice. They said they don't replace windows themselves but they did give me a recommendation of a business that specializes in car windows. They did a good job.
If the replacement will be covered by your insurance, they can refer you to glass replacement services. Many years ago I had one of the services that come to you--rather than you taking the car in to them--replace a smashed rear window of my Toyota but they didn't get it watertight, so I had to take it to their shop a couple of times anyway.

It took a while for the work to get done, and a big of nagging to get it done right, but once it was done, the quality was good and I paid no more than my deductible for it.

At least replacing window glass is a quick and straightforward process, and covered by insurance.
Check with your homeowner's insurance; it may cover the items stolen.

I'm glad you are finding some comfort that the spinning wheel is safe. Good luck finding a place that does a good job fixing your window.

Isn't Betty's wheel the coolest thing?
