An un-Fair decision

I haz a sad.

Yesterday, I made the hard decision not to go to the Minnesota State Fair, either as a demonstrator or an attendee.

I was signed up to do two four-hour stints of demonstrating spinning at the Minnesota State Fair, and I just canceled, because it’s indoors, unventilated, and will be full of unmasked and unvaccinated people. Normally it's an annual gig that I love (and I love the rest of the fair, too), but I signed up before Delta, and now I just don’t think it's safe.

Totally un-Fair.

(I did enter four items in the handspinning categories, but dropoff and pickup for those is under much safer conditions.)

You're one of the people I thought of as I read the Fair's pleading with their prospective attendees to not be assholes, basically. But of course many of them will gleefully be just that. I'm really sorry. The fair should have required masks and proof of vaccination, but the kind of security they'd need to keep people from violent behavior would have had to be planned well in advance and might not seem feasible. Anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers are like abusive family members, and at some point institutions are going to have to stop tiptoeing around and whispering, "Don't make them mad."
