Purim invitation

Purim is coming the goose is getting fat, and I'd like to do something about it. Purim is one of the minor Jewish holidays, one of the many that's characterized by the description (from JoelR, IIRC) "We didn't die, let's eat!" (More information here: http://www.search.com/reference/Book_of_Esther)

It's traditional on Purim to distribute "shalach manot," gifts of food, particularly baked goods, most particularly hamantaschen, which are filled three-cornered pastries intended to be reminiscent of Haman's three-cornered hat -- Haman being the villain of the piece.

I'd like to do this, but I'm dubious about trying to reach everyone. So -- instead of doing that, I'm going to stay home and distribute shalach manot to anyone who comes by. I'll be "at home" from 1 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, March 12 (this coming Sunday). Erev Purim (the evening of the day before Purim) is actually on March 13, and Purim on March 14, but a little anticipation seems reasonable.

I hope people reading this will stop by, hang out a bit, and collect some baked goods. I'm not sure what all I'll be making, except that chocolate and ginger will probably be involved in some measure.

RSVPs would be nice (just so I can get some idea of how much to bake), but aren't required.

My address is 6915 10th Ave. S., in Richfield, Minnesota, phone number 612/861-1468.

What a lovely idea. I wish I could come by, but (a) it's a bit far (b) it's inside the US. :-(

I can't say with any reasonable degree of certainty whether we will be in town and doing all right on Sunday afternoon, but if we are, we'll be there.

My goodness, what a lovely thought! I wish we lived in the same state so I could stop by! :) I remember dressing up and ringing the gregors during the reading of the Book of Esther before the Purim carnival when I was a kid, but observing the holiday seems to have waned in my adulthood, possibly because it's such a party holiday, and a party is harder to have on your own.

I remember being struck with envy when I found out what huge shindig they have at Brandeis University for Purim every year. Everyone goes to listen to the Book of Esther at the start of the festivities, but instead of ringing gregors, all the students do shots every time the Rabbi says "Haman." Now that's a Purim party. {g}

Of course, it would help if you knew who that was!

I am trying very hard to make it...

Is bringing baked goods the sort of thing one could do?

I'm sorry I didn't make it... Sunday was not a great day for getting out.
