Cat on a plane pt 2

The transfer has been effected, and the whole thing went off with minimal drama. The plane was about 3/4 full, and I managed to score two seats to myself (plus cat). Random wailed a few times while on the plane, but mostly sat quietly. (Again, I give a certain amount of credit to catnip.)

And despite lousy phone connections, [livejournal.com profile] txanne and I met up with each other without difficulty. She sent me a picture of Random in his new nest. He seems to be starting to settle in.

Query: Do cats have Eustachian tubes or something of the sort that could cause them pain when the airplane ascends and descends?

They do. (A cat of my mother's had nasopharyngeal polyps and ear infections, and the state of his Eustachian tubes was discussed from time to time.) I'd guess it's a mammal thing, maybe even a land-animal thing.

I'm glad Random seems to be settling in well. He's a big old sweetie, and I'm sure he and [livejournal.com profile] txanne will do excellently together.

I have been told quite firmly (and I wish I could remember the source) that cats' ears are designed somewhat differently than those of humans, with the side effect that they are extremely uncomfortable when riding around in cars because their ears hurt and their senses of balance betray them. If this is anything other than a most apocryphal urban legend, they would plainly be just as uncomfortable riding in planes. But there are a lot of such legends out there.

When you search Google images for "cat ears", expecting to find a diagram, you instead find a somewhat shocking amount of cosplay.

I suppose I should have expected this.

I checked on him all day, fed him around 8:30, and let him out of the bathroom around 9:45. He climbed up on the bed with me and cuddled for a bit. Now he's wandering around Looking At Stuff. He complained a great deal in the car, but aside from a few remarks about the stairs he hasn't had much to say since he got here.

I hope he likes it here. He's such a sweetie!

Aha! I have been purred at and required to perform skritches. I think we'll get along just fine.

Aww! Hooray for purring and skritches!
