Still arriving today, but late

Just let myself be bumped for compensation, so I'll be flying from Detroit to Montreal at 5:45 instead of 2:00.

See you soon!

(this should have gone to the Farthing Party community, but it doesn't appear possible to do that from the phone app)

I have arrived at Wiscon

The spinning wheel was a success at the Gathering. Many spinners, they go the Wiscon.

So far, I have had an appletini, a nuts and berries (Frangelico and Chambord and cream), a pom-nom (vodka and pomegranate and cranberry), and a sidecar (thank you, Mary Robinette Kowal). And I was able to use the drop spindle during opening ceremonies, so I must be spacing them reasonably well.

I'm now sipping a mimosa from the LJ party. It threatens to be a rather alcoholic weekend.

Cat on a plane pt 1

The first stage of the Great Cat Transfer is complete. There was a bit of excitement with security, because they wanted me to carry Random in my arms through the metal detector. After some back-and-forth, we went into one of the small inspection rooms. I took Random out of the carrier, and they took it away and ran it through x-ray.

He yowered in the taxi, but he's settled down. I don't know if it's resignation or stonedness, but much catnip has been applied.

Aftermath

I went out for an early dinner with Pat WINOLJ, and when I came back, I had power again. Yay.

Then I started up the computer. No Internet. After too much time spent conferring with Visi and Qwest, it was determined that my DSL modem (which is really a router but never mind that) had apparently fried its firmware. Qwest is sending me a new one.

So I tried dial-up. Every time (sample size of 3), the computer freezes at the authenticating step. I don't know if this means the "real" modem was fried, too, or if it's something with the desktop computer. (If anyone has theories, I'd be interested in hearing them.) In any case, zero connectivity for the moment.

Then I went to the kitchen and discovered that both the stove and microwave had no power. Greg thought those might be fried as well, being solid state, but he had me cycle the circuit breakers just in case. Thankfully, that did the trick.

So Internet is out for the nonce, and the light in my refrigerator died, but everything else seems to have escaped damage.

I don't recall experiencing that before

There's a thunderstorm winding down, but it's going out with a bang. The lightning flashed, the thunder boomed, and the electricity went it -- all simultaneously. I just hope it wasn't my house taking the direct hit. Getting a power line probably means fewer fried devices (if more houses). But my UPS isn't beeping, which doesn't bode well.

In the meantime, my body can stop with the adrenaline thing right now. Stupid body.

ETA: The Excel Energy truck stopped in front of my driveway a few minutes ago, and I got an update from the guys as they were returning to their truck. Apparently the lightning strike took out a high-voltage line behind my house. The whole neighborhood is out. The good news is that they should have it fixed in a couple of hours. Much better than a couple of days.

In the dark

The electricity just went out in the thunderstorm. Pretty impressive out there.

ETA: And they're back. That was quick.

I haz no Internet

First it slowed to a crawl, then disappeared altogether. Current theory is that the DSL router (modem) died. Qwest is sending me a replacement, but it probably won't arrive until Thursday at the earliest.

I am not a happy camper. I'll be even unhappier if the new router doesn't fix the problem.

I'm an idiot, escapade edition

Does anyone have the van info that Shoshanna arranged? I forgot my printout and I can't get to her LJ where I think she posted something. If you have it, please reply here or send email to bjf@visi.com.

Thanks!
