Thank you. Blackberry the cat is canonical to the books, though he doesn't usually advance the plot all that much.

Rereading the books with an adult's eyes made me realize they were written with an omniscient POV rather than just from Judy's viewpoint, which may be one of the things that made them feel so much deeper than the Nancy Drew books.
