Oops, she explained.

Yesterday I realized that my plane ticket to LAX was for 9 pm instead of 9 am. I'd intended to do a last-minute switch at 6 am (3 hours ahead) for the flight I wanted at the cost of $50. Unfortunately, while there had been plenty of space last night, it was full up when I called. There was room on the 7:15 flight if I could make that.

The taxi came quickly, the security line was short, and here I am at LAX with a couple of hours to kill until the rest of the vanload arrives.

I think I'll have brunch.

My power just went out. I'm supposed to be hosting a Romance Exchange in four hours.

My land line phone went out around 10:30, taking my DSL access with it. My iPad didn't connect to the Internet at all via AT&T until I called tech support. The tech got me working again but now there are no bars (and of course no house wireless).

And my nice reliable cell phone, the one thing I have left to connect me with the outside world, keeps losing its connection and going to SOS only.

The earliest repair time for the land line is timorrow morning. And of course I have a zillion things piled up that I need access for. I guess I'll go work on some editing that I can do.

I discovered the hard way (by being without access) that Dropbox doesn't actually copy files to the iPad -- it just makes them accessible via wifi or whatever.

Wifi access aboard ship is way too pricy ($.55/minute at the cheapest), so when we hit Juneau tomorrow and I visit a Starbucks or whatever, does anyone know how I offload the files onto iPad hard storage? If it matters, they're mostly Word files, plus one PDF.

Thanks for any help!

(still an iPad newbie)

So I'm sitting here drinking a sidecar (thanks to Mary Robinette Kowal), and the Mets are playing the Brewers on TV. Except that the uniforms say "New York Cubans" and "Bears." Anyone know what gives?

No roadwork worth mentioning on 90/94. I guess all the construction people are taking the weekend off.

I just don't know what.

My doorknob has failed and I'm stuck in my bedroom. Pat is going over to Blaisdell Poly to get my house key from Lydy to attack the problem from the other side of the door. In the meantime, the cat (the proximate cause of all this) are going nuts, and I'd really like to have a chance to pee.

Luckily, as Pat pointed out, I have plenty to read.

Would anyone be interested in sharing a taxi to the airport from Anticipation tomorrow (Monday)? I understand the shuttle takes a couple of hours and involves a transfer.

I need to leave around 3:30 pm, preferably from the Delta.

To reach me: a) leave a message here before 9 am Monday, b) call or text me at [redacted], or c) leave a message for me on the voodoo message board.

Taxi fare is $38, so a rideshare would be appreciated.

ETA: Looks like I have two people to ride with -- one found via the Ride Wanted board at the con, and one via serendipity when I asked the right question as I was sharing an escalator.

The power is out. I work at home. There's remarkably little useful stuff I can do without a working computer.

And I must have something set up incorrectly with the UPS, because it beeped when the power went out, but the computer died immediately.

There are four kittens, plus Qwerty the mama cat, currently residing in my bathroom. It's remarkable that I get anything done other than kitten-watching.

Rick did some finishing touches, and we settled the final bill today.

Tonight, furniture goes back in place. Tomorrow, maybe the rest of my life will.

And it sure looks fine. [livejournal.com profile] arkuat can move in anytime now. (The photo is of the craft room; the bedroom isn't visible, but it looks fine, too.)

There are approximately 20 airplanes in front of us.

I cleared the waitlist (as did everyone else on it, I think), and am aboard the plane at 7:02 pm. With luck, I'll walk in the door around 9:00. Don't know if I'll have the energy to watch the Vikings-Bears game after that.

Ah, the joys of traveling on Thanksgiving Sunday in bad weather. I was scheduled for a 10 pm flight from ORD to MSP, but I got to the airport around 3:45 to see if I could get on the 4:40 flight. I was number five on the waitlist, with 10 spots supposedly open. That was the good news. The bad news was that when I checked the board, the 4:40 flight was rescheduled to 6:20, the 7:55 flight was rescheduled to 10:30, and my original 10:00 flight wasn't listed yet. Since then, the 4:40 flight has been rescheduled twice, to 6:30 and 6:40. The plane has now left Toronto and is in the air, so there shouldn't be any further delays. I hope. And I hope I actually get on the flight.

In the meantime, just sign me

So to speak. I hope.

Tomorrow afternoon I see the retinologist, and if he's still happy with rhe results, I get to hold my head up again. My neck and back are sore from the unnatural position, despite the Valium prescription. As I told Lydy, Valium isn't anywhere near as much fun as a drug with so much abuse reputation asit has should be. She suggested that alcohol needs to be involved (carefully) for maximal recreational effects. I think I'll pass.

In any case, if I get the all-clear tomorrow, I get to go home Thursday, and Friday will either be spent recuperating or easing back into work, depending on how I feel.

I still don't have any useful sight in my left eye, but I only have to wear the eye shield at night; the patch is optional during the day depending on how tired my eye gets.

Looking forward to my cat, my books, my waterbed, and a massage. Necks just aren't _meant_ for this sort of positioning.

More tomorrow, I hope.

To a large extent, life consists of better living through chemistry. I have hydocodone/ibuprofen for pain, Valium for muscle relaxation, and Ambien CR for sleeping. I've decided that Valium's main benefit, other than making the neck and back strain from being face-down all the time more tolerable, is that it makes being bored less boring.

I finished listening to A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and am now about halfway through Stranger in a Strange Land. Comfort reading seems to work better -- I tried The Yiddish Policeman's Union and couldn't focus well enough on it. Just got called for lunch, so more later maybe.
carbonel: Beth wearing hat (Default)
That's the good news. The bad news is that the eye surgeon doesn't want me reading books.

My eye feels like someone poked it with a sharp stick, but the drugs take the edge off.
