Them!

No, not giant ants from White Sands, but still ants. The ants stopped spontaneously appearing around the sink from out of nowhere, and I thought the worst was over.

That is, until I went to feed the cats yesterday afternoon. Their food dish (with the bit of dry food left over from yesterday in it) and the area around it was just swarming with ants. I didn't stop to count the ants -- I grabbed the food dish, walked outside, and dumped the contents, ants, food, and all, into the far end of the garden. I then went back inside and swept the remaining ants out, then fed the cats.

These don't appear to be the carpenter ants [livejournal.com profile] minnehaha K mentioned, since they're more like an eighth to three-eighths of an inch, instead of the quarter- to half-inch the website she pointed me at says. But they sure are organized. I just checked the cat food dish, and the five or so pieces of dry food left (all the cats get is dry food) had about 30 or so ants doing their thing around it.

I think the next solution is for the cats to go on timed feedings, and when the time's up, the food goes away.

I'm just thankful that the ants don't seem to have discovered the bag of cat food that the cats get fed from. I had visions yesterday of reaching into the bag, and pulling out a measuring cup that consisted of half cat food, half ants.
