Cancun

I've been here in Club Med Cancun since Saturday. My cold is much improved; as [livejournal.com profile] lsanderson pointed out, drinks on the beach are a sovereign cure for what ails one.

I haven't had as much luck on the trapeze as I'd like, so I probably won't get a chance to fly to the catcher unless things improve considerably in the next day or two. But I'm having fun nevertheless. I've also gone waterskiiing and snorkeling, plus the standard quota of sitting on the beach and around the pool. The pool has the advantage of nice men coming around from time to time to bring you drinks (which are included in the cost of the resort).

Today, however, has been a bit more exciting. Yesterday night, the wind started blowing. And blowing. It's still blowing, at 11:00 a.m. Club Med time (Cancun is on Central time, but Club Med is on Eastern time). I don't know what the maximum wind speed is, but it's really pretty impressive -- maxing out in excess of 40 mph, at a guess. A great deal of the sand from the beach is now in the air, in the pool, on the ground, and all around. The staff are working hard to get it back where it belongs, both sweeping it up and wetting it down to try to get it to stay put. It's actively painful to walk along the beach, because of the sand whipping through the air.

The waves in the ocean are several feet high, and the beach has red flags posted, which I assume means "no swimming." I'm a strong swimmer, and I'd love to try it, but I'd probably want a life jacket to wear. I keep hearing people making quips about surfers, but I don't think the waves would be good for surfing, because they're not consistently in one direction.

We were supposed to rent a car and go to Chichen Itza today (about 100 miles away), but we cancelled because of the weather. Unfortunately, this leaves us at rather loose ends, since the beach and the pool -- the standard resort activities -- aren't available right now. It's supposed to be windy tomorrow, but not as much, so maybe we'll manage the expedition tomorrow instead.

Today, I think I'll go hang out in the bar, which is indoors but with windows on three of the walls, and watch the ocean from behind the glass. I've discovered the joy of low-carb mojitos, made with Splenda instead of sugar. Not quite authentic, but still yummy.

And I'd better end this now, since I only bought an hour of Internet access, and I want to have some left for later.
