There's a thunderstorm winding down, but it's going out with a bang. The lightning flashed, the thunder boomed, and the electricity went it -- all simultaneously. I just hope it wasn't my house taking the direct hit. Getting a power line probably means fewer fried devices (if more houses). But my UPS isn't beeping, which doesn't bode well.

In the meantime, my body can stop with the adrenaline thing right now. Stupid body.

ETA: The Excel Energy truck stopped in front of my driveway a few minutes ago, and I got an update from the guys as they were returning to their truck. Apparently the lightning strike took out a high-voltage line behind my house. The whole neighborhood is out. The good news is that they should have it fixed in a couple of hours. Much better than a couple of days.

Aftermath

I went out for an early dinner with Pat WINOLJ, and when I came back, I had power again. Yay.

Then I started up the computer. No Internet. After too much time spent conferring with Visi and Qwest, it was determined that my DSL modem (which is really a router but never mind that) had apparently fried its firmware. Qwest is sending me a new one.

So I tried dial-up. Every time (sample size of 3), the computer freezes at the authenticating step. I don't know if this means the "real" modem was fried, too, or if it's something with the desktop computer. (If anyone has theories, I'd be interested in hearing them.) In any case, zero connectivity for the moment.

Then I went to the kitchen and discovered that both the stove and microwave had no power. Greg thought those might be fried as well, being solid state, but he had me cycle the circuit breakers just in case. Thankfully, that did the trick.

So Internet is out for the nonce, and the light in my refrigerator died, but everything else seems to have escaped damage.
