A visit to the butcher
Mar. 16th, 2016 01:47 pmThis is a follow-up to the previous post, wherein I expressed a wish for a small amount of ham to put in split pea soup. Someone helpfully (not used ironically) reminded me that Richfield now has a butcher's, and in fact it's in the same parking lot as LA Fitness, the gym I visit at least three times a week.
I was the only customer at 9 am, just after the place opened, and the clerk/proprietor/whatever was very helpful. He pointed me to the ham steaks, but agreed that 8 ounces of ham steak was a lot for a small batch of soup. He then cut me one thick slice of ham from the deli selections.
I also bought skirt steak (which I love but have trouble finding), a half pound of pulled pork, a package of pork liver pate (what I really wanted was chopped liver, but this is a butcher's, not a Jewish-style deli after all), and some frozen beef shanks for the next batch of soup.
The split pea soup turned out well. I had a small bowl of it after it was done cooking, before it had really congealed properly. Today's bowl, after it had been in the refrigerator for a day, was a great improvement.
Tomorrow, I plan to have salad, baked potato, and skirt steak for dinner, which will be the most organized meal I will have eaten in a couple of years.
