The air conditioning guy came yesterday, and diagnosed the problem as a frozen air conditioner. He recommended changing the filter (the old one was marginal) and turning off the a/c for a day or more, until everything melted.

I did so, and turned it back on around noon today. The temperature has been steadily dropping, and is getting close to the 75 degrees I keep it in summer. The fact that it's no longer sweltering outside probably helps, too.

I expect to sleep much better tonight.

The first time that I heard the maintenance staff at work was up on the roof "kicking the ice off the A/C unit" I thought it was a joke. But no, condensers icing up on a black tar roof in 95-degree weather is apparently a pretty common occurrence.

This is apparently the same thing that happened to our downstairs freezer when it got overworked. Glad your A/C came back after a little rest period!
