I'm sitting here in front of my computer, shivering. I'm wearing two layers of clothing and contemplating adding a third. The problem is the thermostat. I switched it from heating to air conditioning a couple of weeks ago, and I promised myself that would be the last time.

Every spring and fall I go through this -- air conditioner on the warm days, heater on the cold days (and nights). Isn't there some thermostat I can buy that I can just set to a temperature and it'll know whether the heater or air conditioner should kick in?

I don't know of a cheap residential thermostat that's that smart.

However, perhaps a dozen years of therapy could fix the other half of the problem? (Not that I've tried it; I always resist switching modes too.)

I don't think there is or we'd have had it in Northern California. Where we lived the days could be very warm and our house was on a west facing hill. And that wall was mostly window. But as soon as that sun went down it could get darn chilly. I went back and forth between heat and air all the time.
