AKICOLJ: Unlocking a Palm Treo 680

carbonelI have a Treo 680 that I used happily for several years. It was one of the earliest smartphones, and as technology marched on, eventually became one of the dumbest of smartphones. I replaced it with a hand-me-down iPhone 3 about a year ago.
I have a friend who is using a pay-as-you-go phone and a Palm PDA. The latter is getting crancky and old, but she still prefers that operating system for some things. (She also has an iPad, so she's not a Luddite by any means.)
It occurs to me that if there were some way to unlock my old Treo and set it up to be pay as you go somehow, she could combine the two devices for as long as the Treo kept working. She's not interested in setting the Treo up with AT&T because she has a very inexpensive plan at the moment, and AT&T's own pay-as-you-go plan isn't as good as what she currently has. I understand it's theoretically possible to unlock the Treo, but I have no idea how to go about doing so. Is it something in the hardware? It can't be as simple as replacing the SIM card, is it?

They should do this for free, especially with an older phone.

Date: 2012-01-17 05:20 pm (UTC)Next stupid question: where does one get an appropriate SIM? The friend currently has a Verizon phone and would prefer to stay with that plan. Should she get the SIM directly from Verizon, or can she buy a generic one (and where does one get that?) and fill it with Verizon minutes, or something else? Her current phone doesn't use a SIM card, so transferring that one isn't a possibility, even if it were compatible.
