A memorable day
Sep. 30th, 2003 11:33 pmI now own two houses.
The closing was today for the house I'm buying. "Have bought" I guess is now correct, though in fact the bank owns most of it. The closing was boring, which is the best sort of closing there is. Anytime there's excitement in a closing, something is going wrong. Here, the biggest excitement was hearing the seller contend with her bank because it turned out they charged her $250 to pay off the loan early. I believe this was USBank, just in case anyone plans to pay off a loan early and doesn't wish to be caught by surprise.
The final walkthrough was yesterday, and there were no real surprises, except that I had forgotten that while the real estate info describes the big room as being 20x22, it isn't really that large because a chunk of it was carved out to make the pantry. Still a goodly size, though.
I definitely want to strip the wallpaper in a bunch of places. The owner said that the wallpaper was installed in such a way that it should be easily strippable. My parents have this faux wallpaper look all over their house which is apparently achieved by using a feather duster to paint bits over an already-painted wall. Rather like sponge painting, but much more elegant. The feather duster needs to be wielded by someone who knows what she's doing, of course.
The carpeting in the family room, I have decided, is going to stay as it is for now. I don't love it, but I can live with it -- and given the ongoing struggle to keep my cats from eliminating on any carpeted surface, I may have to wait out their lifetimes before redoing the carpeting. Yes, I am trying to deal with the behavioral issues, too, but I'm not sure there's an answer.
I packed another 20 or so boxes today, including about a third of my zine collection. I hate to see them disappear into boxes, but time is getting short, since I move in just over a week. Still haven't started with the kitchen, but the rest of the house is progressing reasonably well.
The other memorable item, of course, was the Cubs. They won the first game of their divisional playoff against the Braves. Lest anyone think this is a minor achievement, it's worth pointing out that the last time the Cubs won a postseason playoff game away from home was in 1945. The Cubs beat the Braves (who have been in the playoffs the last 12 years) on their home ground. They did it by outpitching and outhitting them. There was admittedly some sloppy play, especially the inning where they had the bases loaded and no one out and didn't manage to score, but they pulled it off. Kerry Wood pitched magnificently for most of his outing and hit a two-run double, and the relief pitchers also did a fine job. It went down to the wire, with the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the 9th, but the Cubs won.
I called my parents to have someone to celebrate with, and the line was busy. Turned out, when I finally got through, that my brother in Portland had beat me to it.
And tomorrow we get to do it all over again. Watch the Cubs play, that is -- one house closing per month is quite enough.
