B-a-a-a-h: another meme
Aug. 2nd, 2006 01:57 pmThis is a twist on the Letter Meme. Instead of coming up with ten items for a certain letter, you come up with five song titles for a certain letter and explain why you picked them. If interested then leave a comment. I'll give you a letter. You post this blurb in your journal along with your list.
I asked, and
ckd gave me 'G'.
Garden Song (Dave Mallet, also Pete Seeger IIRC):
I think it's the tune that gets me with this song, rather than the lyrics, which are right on the border between cheerful and twee. But the tune is nice and bouncy, and makes me feel good to hear.
Genie on a Tabletop (Al Stewart):
This is an unabashed "feel-good" song, but I love the way the lyrics and the melody go together. "And it makes me feel okay...like a genie on a tabletop surfing through the month of May..."
Geordie (June Tabor and Maddy Prior):
I grew up hearing the mournful version where Geordie is hanged with a golden chain, and didn't hear this version until I was in college or later. This one, where Geordie's wife heads out to ransom him, and is ready to kick ass if the king doesn't let her do so, is much more to my taste.
Go Cubs Go (Steve Goodman):
I believe WGN (or possibly the Cubs) commissioned Steve Goodman to write this song for them to play at the beginning of televised Cubs games, as a theme song. It was never as popular as some of the others they've had ("Batter up! Let's go! We're taking the afternoon off. It's a beautiful day for a ball game...") but I've been a Cubs fan and a Steve Goodman fan since childhood -- how could I not like it?
Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind (Christine Lavin):
It's the lyrics that make this song for me, especially the last verse. I like the message that other people can cause you to change and grow, and make you appreciate things that you didn't before -- even if the process doesn't always seem worth it.
