Jewish penicillin

I've been feeling not-well for over a week now. First I had a toothache (and a root canal). Then I had a sinus infection, and my left nostril became a yucky faucet. I was on antibiotics for both of those, and kept thinking the penicillin would kick in and the drippiness would dry up.

Several days ago, I had to acknowledge that what I have now is a realio trulio coryza cold. I haven't felt particularly hungry (though that hasn't kept me from eating, alas, if food is put in front of me), but I've drunk a lot of tea with honey.

Today, I thought to myself, self, what I really want for lunch is chicken soup. I didn't have any of the good stuff in the house, let alone homemade, but I did have a can of Campbell's old-fashioned chicken noodle soup that I'd bought the last time I was feeling rotten. I nuked it and ate it -- kind of bland, but soothing on the throat.

And after that, I was finally able to pop my left ear, which has been plugged to a painful and hearing-impairing state for the past several days, despite all the tea and Sudafed I offered it. I still feel rotten, but my ear feels a lot better.

Honestly, I don't know if there's a connection, but I think I'll buy a couple more cans for future use the next time I go to the grocery.

A couple cans o'soup in the cupboard are always a good idea, but if I were in town, I'd leave an order of hot pot soup from Saigon Uptown at your front door. (And tell you it was there.)

They don't deliver, as far as I know, but their hot pot soup saw me through many a cold/flu/agony/crud in my Minnesota years. Yes, they'll package it to go. It's in their best interest, as it gets the germs out of their restaurant all the faster.

(They package the steamed veggies separately so they don't get soggy on the way home. At least, they did 10 years ago...and 20 years ago...and more. There's enough for 2 large bowls, or at least 3 medium-sized servings.)

I'm sure there's bunches of great pho available, and it would likely do the trick, too. It's not just penicillin for the Asian Jewish population. :-)

Several years ago, my mother called to check on how I was doing (I was sick), and said that she would make me chicken soup if I were in Chicago. I said I wished she could. We talked a while more, then rang off. About an hour later, the doorbell rang. It was a nearby Chinese restaurant, delivering egg drop soup and chow mein. I tried to refuse it, saying I hadn't ordered it, but he showed me the order sheet with the correct address. It took me a while to figure out my mother had used Google to find the restaurant and ordered for delivery (in my defense, I was sick at the time). I was really touched at that -- and the restaurant, which I'd never used before, has become my go-to place if I want quick Chinese takeout.
