I'm thinking of making split pea soup using one of those Manischewitz tubes of peas (and five cups of water). I'd like some ham in it. Not a lot, just an ounce or two, in small chunks. I'm not sure where one can obtain a small amount of ham. I can get sliced ham from the grocery, but I'm not sure the machine can slice it a quarter-inch or so thick, which is what I really want.

I suppose normal people do it the other way around, making split pea soup because they have some ham left over from something else, but for various reasons, I've never cooked a ham in my life.

They sell ham steak sorts of things at the grocery, over by lunchmeat. You can chop up as much as you want and then freeze the rest for later soups. Or for later omelets or whatever.

(This is not my actual recommendation if what you wanted was to eat a ham--it's not something I buy. But I have seen them. And I know that ham freezes reasonably well.)

If bacon would work instead, I find that one of those packets of bacon crumbles they sell for salad making works well for a largish pot of potato soup.

You absolutely can go to the grocery (or any) deli and ask for a quarter-inch slice of ham.

If you can, add and puree some frozen green peas into it at the end.

Yeah, the salad bar option is how I solved this problem in the past.
