Cubs win 2016 World Series!

It went down to the wire. It took seven games, 10 innings, almost five hours -- and 108 years -- but the Cubs managed to win it all.

In the greater scheme of things, major league sports don't matter a bit, and there's a lot of money and dubious ethics in the sausage-making machine. But in the lesser scheme of things, as a lifelong Cubs fan, I'm just happy. So very happy.

I'm happy for all of you Cubs fans.

But... I really wish that Nate Silver hadn't pointed out that the Cubs had the same statistical chance of winning the World Series as Donald Trump has of winning the presidency.

Well, this year's Cubs players made their own destiny. Trump, on the other hand, seems to be his own worst enemy.

Yup. I'm not a lifelong Cubs fan, because I only came to Chicago in 1981, but they are the team I've lived and died with since coming here. And I have wandered around in a bit of a daze all day. It's a good feeling. I'm even happier for the people like you, who've been waiting for so much longer. Steve Goodman is smiling, you know that.

If I believed in such things (which I don't), I might think that the Cubs got a little help in the 9th inning of the 7th game from the ghost of Ernie Banks. Though that devalues the amazing resilience of this year's Cubs.

I believe in such things on alternate Tuesdays, so the thought makes me smile. And I wouldn't say that it devalues this year's Cubs. Say, rather, that it just enlarges the team's roster in a wonderful way.
