Connecting two computers redux

Thanks for all the useful advice in the previous post.
I suppose I can claim a moral victory of sorts, but it was a practical failure.
With the help of the tech support guy at work (who had originally told me it wasn't possible, which is why I posted here, but he changed his mind) and the info you guys provided, I was able to get the two computers talking to each other and ostensibly sharing a drive.
Unfortunately, a) for some reason sharing wasn't allowed in my Program Files directory, which is where most of what I wanted was hiding, b) the new computer kept crashing when I was copying files (I saw the BSOD eight times before I gave it up as a bad job), and when the computer didn't crash, Windows Explorer did.
So I'm going to take the advice of many of you and copy the files I need to my USB drive, then copy them to the new computer.
In the meantime, I'm exceedingly grateful for Plug and Play, or whatever it is that lets me swap mouse, monitor, and keyboard from one computer to another without rebooting either computer.
