I just don't know what.

My doorknob has failed and I'm stuck in my bedroom. Pat is going over to Blaisdell Poly to get my house key from Lydy to attack the problem from the other side of the door. In the meantime, the cat (the proximate cause of all this) are going nuts, and I'd really like to have a chance to pee.

Luckily, as Pat pointed out, I have plenty to read.

This happened to me when I was small and my parents were out for the evening. My babysitter was Quite Distraught.

I trust in Pat's mightiness that I will not have to hold a good thought on this for all that long. Hang in there.

Annoying, to be sure. Good thing you have a phone available.

When the equivalent happened to me, I could open the door with pliers or (if the assembly had fallen out the other side) with a screwdriver or large pen. You may not have these options.

Good luck.

I hope you're free by now...
I rescued the neighbor's babysitter when one of the older kids locked her in the nursery, then left for parts unknown. I had to cut the screen door from the patio (luckily, the glass door was open!). I can't remember if I could just turn the outside knob of the nursery door or if I had to jimmy it.

Now I have yet one more reason to be glad that my house has only one interior door, and that one is on the bathroom, which I never shut since I live alone (well, with two wiener dogs and the cat). There are two bedrooms with three doorways between them, none of which have actual doors in them. For the most part, it makes life much easier all round.

Glad to see by your update that you are free. And since I doubt I'll be online on Sunday, HAPPY ALMOST BIRTHDAY!!

Hopefully you're rescued, but if not, and for the future, can the door be jimmied? IE, can you slide something in past the latch, work into place at the latch, then pull backward to release the latch?

(I am certain there's a wiki article....but my google foo is failing me)

Why not climb out the window and go around?

Well, the most important tool was resourceful friends, but contacting them required a telephone.

Now that it's all okay, I can laugh, right?
